A standard homeowners policy does not cover flood damage.
In South Florida that matters. Flood coverage is a separate policy, through the National Flood Insurance Program or a private insurer, and NFIP policies usually take 30 days to start. Buy it before hurricane season, not during a storm watch.
Hurricane
Most Florida policies carry a separate hurricane deductible.
It is often a percentage of your dwelling coverage, such as 2% or 5%, rather than a flat dollar amount. On a home insured for $400,000, a 2% deductible is $8,000. We show you the hurricane deductible on every quote.
Discounts
A wind mitigation inspection can lower what you pay.
Florida insurers have to offer discounts for features that reduce wind damage, such as roof straps, impact windows and shutters. If you’ve never had an inspection, or you’ve upgraded the house since, we tell you whether one is worth it.
Compared
We compare more than one carrier for your home, condo or rental.
Homeowners (HO-3), condo unit owners (HO-6) and renters (HO-4) each need a different policy. We quote the right one and line up coverage, deductibles and price side by side.
What we need for a home quote
Roof age and the age of the plumbing, electrical and air-conditioning systems weigh heavily with Florida insurers. Older homes may need a 4-point inspection before a company will write a policy.

A wind mitigation or 4-point inspection report, if you have one
No. Flood damage needs a separate flood policy. NFIP policies usually have a 30-day waiting period, so plan ahead of hurricane season.
What is a 4-point inspection?
An inspection of the roof, electrical, plumbing and heating and air-conditioning systems. Many Florida insurers require one for older homes before they will offer a policy.
I own a condo. Doesn’t the association’s policy cover me?
The association’s master policy usually covers the building and common areas. Your own HO-6 policy covers the inside of your unit, your belongings, your liability and assessments the association may pass on to owners.
Do renters need insurance?
Renters insurance covers your belongings and your personal liability, which the landlord’s policy does not. Many landlords require it in the lease.
